Historic Market Street

The Hillyard Historic Business District, or Market Street District, serves as the historic and economic heart of the neighborhood.

Developed between 1901 and 1948, commercial buildings in the business district reflect the area’s roots as a working-class railroad town and its ongoing reliance on local businesses to sustain community life. The district’s historical significance was underscored by its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and the Spokane Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Today, Market Street businesses like Green’s Fresh Market and Derailer Coffee serve as community cornerstones, providing essential services and fostering a strong sense of community. Green’s Fresh Market addresses Hillyard’s long-standing status as a food desert by offering fresh produce, while Derailer Coffee, operating in the former United Bank building, celebrates the neighborhood’s rich history as a railroad town through community-building efforts like book drives, open-mic nights, and fundraisers for local schools.

Market Street also plays a central role in hosting community events that celebrate Hillyard’s heritage, namely the Hillyard Hi-Jinks Parade, a highlight of the annual Hillyard Festival, which draws residents and community members alike to its festivities.

These businesses and events play a vital role in defining Hillyard’s identity and supporting revitalization efforts amid economic and infrastructure challenges.
